Makamba Diocese Tidings gives you an overview of special events which take place within the Diocese and the surrounding region. As you read this November-December Issue, you will be requested to praise God with us for His mercies endure for ever.

Christmas celebrations.

Though it is prohibited by the Government of Burundi to cut Christmas trees, the Pro-Cathedral of Makamba sufficiently decorated on Christmas. Over 2000 Christians attended the service to hear not only the massage but also the different choirs. Over 152 persons will be baptized on 1st January 07.

High Dignities visit Makamba

a. The Bishop of Makamba Diocese has welcomed the 2nd Vice President, Mrs Marina Barampama on 15th Dec 06 when she was touring the Province of Makamba to inaugurate officially newly built secondary schools. Two of them were built by the Diocese of Makamba with funds from Refugee Education Trust (RET). More classes and staff buildings are still needed to accommodate more repatriates from September 07.

b. His Excellency Peter Nkurunziza, the President of Burundi has officially inaugurated the Youth Centre built by the Diocese of Makamba on 22nd Dec 06. He had donated 50 sacs of cement on 30th August 06 and promised to be present to the inaugural ceremony. In his short speech, he has promised to supply a TV set and one million FIB (1000 US $) to purchase chairs for the centre. The Bishop and the youths are very thankful to the President.

c. Frank and Cardine Katubeho from Uganda have visited Makamba Diocese carrying an encouraging message of Christmas to the people of Makamba.

Mothers’Union Worker visits parishes

Mrs Annonciate Kwizera, the MU worker has been visiting women and MU members in parishes to witness herself of the critical situation in which they live during these heavy rains which are still hitting Makamba and damaging crops and expected harvests. She has this to say: “It is a pity that women will have to face a big famine in the year 2007, unless generous people and organizations would intervene”. Thanks to MSH for her recent intervention.

Seminars

a.Mine Risk Education
Over 35 people from different parishes have attended in Makamba a Mine Risk Education Seminar from 20-22/12/06 in which they were empowered to inform others how to prevent themselves from the mines, grenades and antipersonnel bombs hidden in their lands and plots during the civil war.

b. Universal Chastity Education
Fifty students from different secondary schools are attending a Universal Chastity Education Seminar from 27-29/12/06.They will be taught that abstinence and faithfulness in marriage are the best ways to prevent people from HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. This programme will reach out 18.500 students by September 2008.

Forthcoming Events

  • Makamba Pro-Cathedral will host an evangelical team from the Archdeaconry of Gitambuka in Tanzania from 6-7 January 07
  •  The International Operation Officer, UCE, Mr Andrew Kim visit Makamba at the end of year 2006
  • Universal Chastity Education Programme will be launched in Makamba Secondary schools.
