MEETINGS
The Most Rev. Bernard Ntahoturi has
attended several meetings recently - the Primates meeting in
Tanzania that included a historic service in Zanzibar cathedral
to mark the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in
areas under British rule, and at which Mrs. Hellen Wangusa was
admitted and welcomed as the new Anglican observer at the U.N.
(The Communiqué issued by the Primates can be found on the
Anglican Communion website.) - the 22nd annual conference of the
Consortium of Endowed Parishes in Fort Lauderdale, Florida,
entitled "Centering on Christ, Open to the Spirit" -
the CAPA HIV/AIDS TB and Malaria strategic planning in Nairobi
that was also attended by Mathias Nkurunziza and from which came
CAPA's second 5-year plan. |

CONGRATULATIONS and
FAREWELL
A special service, followed
by a reception, was held in Matana on the 25th March at which
Rev Roger Bowen was made a Canon of St Peter's Cathedral. He and
his wife, Miranda, were thanked for their work over the past 2
years as CMS mission partners. Roger has taught at Matana
Theological Institute and Miranda has supported the work of the
diocese particularly in the area of HIV and AIDS. The Province
wishes them well as they return to the UK.

TEAM CONFERENCE
Ten representatives from the Province
attended the Towards Effective Anglican Mission (TEAM)
conference based on Prophetic Witness, Social Development and
HIV and AIDS held in Boksburg, S. Africa in March. They joined
more than 400 delegates from 30 of the Anglican Communion's 38
provinces to review the response of the church to the Millennium
Development Goals and analyse its common mission. Bishop Pie
Ntukamazina spoke at a seminar on the effect of armed conflict
on resources for development and social equity, and Claudette
Kigeme spoke at a seminar on investing in human security to
prevent conflict and promote peace building. Rev. Pedaculi
Birakengana said on their return, "The importance of
networking on behalf of the poor has been highlighted by this
conference."

NEWS IN BRIEF

Thirteen deacons and one priest were ordained by Bishop John Nduwayo on
18th February in St. Luke's Cathedral, Gitega.

Action of Churches Together has distributed 10kg maize, 10 kg beans, 1
blanket, and 1 kg milk for children, to approx. 1900
households

The Province expresses sympathy to the wife and family of Rev. Canon
Timothy Ngendanzi who died recently at the age of 85.
Ordained deacon in 1965 and priest in 1967 he served in
several dioceses. His funeral was held in Matana on 21st
March.

At the recent general Assembly of the National Council of Churches
Muyinga diocese was accepted as a member.

Dr Kevin Ward, a lecturer at Leeds University, visited the Province in
order to research the history of the Rwanda Mission.
