The Most Rev. Bernard Ntahoturi, with Rt. Rev. Martin Nyaboho and four other delegates, joined 103 delegates, representing 20 provinces from Africa, Asia and Latin America, to address the theme of the Encounter “One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church: Being a faithful Church for such a time as this”. Commitments were made to the authority of Scripture, mission and ministry, theological education, and youth. Other issues discussed included poverty, HIV/AIDS, corruption, and violent conflict. The Encounter’s final statement says,”We offer to God this deepening fellowship among the Global South churches that we might be a servant-body to the larger Church and to the world.”

MOTHERS UNION VISIT

Barbara Lawes, Naomi Herbert, and Jeninah Nasymolo visited all the dioceses during their visit to evaluate the implementation of the literacy and development programme in Matana and Gitega dioceses and provide training for literacy trainers. Commenting on the programme’s impact Archbishop Bernard said, “MULDP in Burundi has shown that literacy is the catalyst for social change. It builds strong communities that are contributing to the continued peace and reconciliation in society…the programme provides a space to debate and dialogue. It also strengthens our solidarity.”

CONSULTATION OF AFRICAN ANGLICAN WOMEN – TANZANIA

Mrs. Claudette Kigeme joined women from the 12 Anglican Provinces in Africa who gathered to discuss issues relating to their empowerment and survival. One of the main speakers was Archdeacon Taimalelagi, the Anglican Observer to the United Nations, who encouraged the organising body, the International Anglican Women’s Network (IAWN) to extend its effectiveness in serving the needs of women.
